Are they monthly dues or monthly assessments?
Monthly Assessments. Some argue that it is inappropriate to use the term "dues" because dues are voluntary, such as membership dues to a health club, while assessments are mandatory, i.e., those levied by homeowners associations. They believe regular payments by homeowner association members must be called "assessments" not dues.
Monthly Dues. Those who defend the term "dues" point to the Oxford English Dictionary definition of the word. The dictionary defines dues as a general term covering any type of monies due, including assessments. Therefore, all assessment are dues by definition.
RECOMMENDATION: The word “dues” is plainer and better understood by owners. Members ofter refer to "monthly dues,"
since they are fixed and regular. They are “due” every month, like rent or a
mortgage payment. Moreover, members often use “assessment” for something levied or something
extraordinary, such as a special or emergency assessment. Accordingly, "dues" is an acceptable term to use when referring to the regular contributions made by owners toward their association's annual operating budget. -
