Starting January 1, 2007, all roofing contractors must carry worker's compensation insurance--they can no longer opt out of the insurance by self-insuring (Bus. & Prof. Code §7125).

RECOMMENDATION: As part of the bidding process, boards or their managing agents should check the status of the roofer's license at www.cslb.ca.gov, and demand proof of insurance.
