Drowning is the number one cause of accidental death for children under the age of five in California. Even though an association's pool may have originally been built without fencing, they may no longer be grandfathered.
mandate the minimum height of the fence and spacing between bars. Gates must be self-closing and self-locking. Keyless exit gates must be marked with a sign stating "EMERGENCY EXIT"
with letters four inches high or more (unless all
gates can be exited without a key). See additional information from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
and the Save Kids Worldwide
: Associations should have their pools inspected for proper fencing, gates and signage. All safety requirements must be complied with and a written record of the inspection should be kept on file.
