12-15-20. MANAGER SURVEY. The Foundation for Community Association Research launched a survey on attracting talent to the management profession.

The results will help management companies identify and attract talented individuals into this valuable and growing profession.

12-5-20. Adrian Adams spoke at an event put on by HOA Organizers. The free virtual event was open to any board member and homeowner.

The event featured experts speaking on topics relevant to associations, such as an update on changes in the law, balcony inspections, insurance basics, waterproofing, environmentally friendly landscaping, etc. For more information, see ABCs of HOAs.

11-1-20. Rob Ward joined ADAMS | STIRLING. Rob is an experienced HOA attorney, both as a litigator and general counsel to associations. In addition, he is active in our industry as a speaker and writer.

For over 22 years, Rob has advised homeowner association boards on general legal matters and represented them in complex litigation, recovering over $200 Million in settlements and judgments. 11-3-20. Partner Laurie S. Poole, President-Elect and 2020 President of CCALADAMS | STIRLING Partner Laurie S. Poole, CCAL has been named President-Elect to CAI’s College of Community Association Lawyers (CCAL) for 2021, and will serve as President for 2022. CCAL is the most prestigious designation and organization in the Community Association industry, with stringent criteria for even being admitted to the College. It was an honor for her to be elected to the Board of Governors by her CCAL Fellows, and now to be selected by the Board of Governors to serve as President-Elect and President is truly a remarkable accomplishment. We at ADAMS | STIRLING are extremely proud, and we look forward to the great things Laurie will do for CCAL and the HOA legal industry in general!
 
11-13-20. Nathan McGuire, Esq., current Chair of CLAC, will be joined by Edith C. 11-6-20. Senior Attorneys Jamie Handrick and Rob Ward participate d in CAI San Diego's educational event Legislative Update & Almost Free Legal Advice. This virtual roundtable featured ten leading attorneys in our industry, where the most pressing questions facing Associations were answered real-time!
 
11-5-20. Partner Laurie S. Poole, Esq., CCAL and Alex Sohal, Esq. spoke at ECHO’s Livestream Event, The Road to New Rental Restrictions from 1:00 ‑ 2:30pm. The Educational Community for Homeowners (ECHO) is a nonprofit membership corporation dedicated to assisting California homeowners' associations, providing assistance through education to homeowners' associations in areas like finances, legal issues, insurance, maintenance, and management. On January 1, 2021, new laws take effect that may require associations to take action. Laurie and Alex explored new rental restrictions, as well as other common leasing provisions, in this webinar.
 
10-13-20. Dr. Lucy Jones (US Geological Survey and CalTech Seismologist), Glenn Pomeroy (CEO, California Earthquake Authority) and Adrian Adams discussed the impact of the next major California earthquake on community associations.
 
The program, California Shakin', is approved for 1.5 CE credits for managers and was presented from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

 

 

9-25 and 9-26-20. Partners Nathan McGuire, Esq., current Chair of CLAC, and Laurie S. Poole, Esq., CCAL, each spoke at the 2020 ECHO HOA University and Expo, a two-day, virtual event dedicated to current topics facing the HOA industry. This highly educational event was attended by HOA board members, interested homeowners and community managers. Nathan participated in the Legislative Update on September 25, and Laurie spoke at the Ask the Attorney session on September 26.

9-25-20. Partner Laurie S. Poole, Esq., CCAL, participated in CAI Coachella Valley’s COVID in the Valley – Ask the Attorney program at 11:30am. She joined a panel of attorneys addressing current issues facing homeowners' associations due to COVID-19. The event was held in a virtual Zoom format so attendees could join from anywhere!

MEET WITH ADAMS STIRLING ATTORNEYS!

9-14-20.  Adams Stirling PLC participated in CAI’s statewide virtual event, held this year from September 14-18. The Firm’s Founder and Managing Partner, Adrian Adams, with co-presenter Christina DeJardin of Delphi Law Group, spoke at Session 4 on September 15 on the four targets of harassment that association boards and managers are required to address. Partner and Chair of CLAC, Nathan McGuire, spoke in the Closing General Session with Legislative Advocate Louie Brown and CAI's Senior Vice President, Government & Public Affairs Dawn Bauman on 2020 Legislative Update and Legislative Process.

In addition, Adams Stirling hosted Virtual Office Hours! Attendees joined a Zoom meeting to visit with and ask questions of Adams Stirling attorneys, including our Partners. Finally, we held a drawing for an exciting raffle prize at the end of each Office Hours session. Prizes include a Road Racing Commuter Bicycle, Canon Digital Camera with Optical Zoom, RING Video Doorbell Pro and BOSE Headphones.

8-28-20. Partner Laurie S. Poole, CCAL spoke at San Diego Community Associations Institute ’s Virtual Leadership Conference.

Laurie, along with Sue McClintic, of Epsten, Grinnell and Howell, and Tim Flanagan, with Flanagan Law, presented on the topic of Boards Behaving Badly at this well-attended event.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

7-5-20. Attorney Nancy Shokohi joined our firm. Nancy is based in San Luis Obispo and will work with our clients along the Central Coast, from Santa Barbara to Monterey, and inland to Bakersfield.

Insurance Litigation. Prior to joining, Nancy gained a wide range of experience as a partner in a mid-size law firm where she spent fifteen years specializing in insurance coverage analysis and litigation, primarily involving environmental contamination.

Non-Profits. Nancy has done legal work for many non-profits over the years. She assisted the Rotary Club, Big Brothers, Big Sisters, Women’s Shelter, the Mozart Festival, the Hearst Castle Board of Directors as well as human trafficking non-profits to resolve legal issues and draft documents and letters.

5-28-20. Adrian Adams participated in a webinar panel put on by the CAI California North Chapter.

The program, Ask the Attorney Panel — COVID-19, was moderated by Jennifer Richardson, CCAM, PCAM of Johnson Ranch Management, and also included attorneys Allison Andersen (Angius & Terry), Darren Bevan (Baydaline & Jacobsen), and Roger Grant (Fenton Grant).

 

5-27-20. Adrian Adams participated in a webinar panel discussion with Dea Franck, Esq. of Epsten APC and Dan Parlow, Esq. of Knighten & Parlow put on by Associa Desert Resort Management. The program, Best Practices & Best in Show, combined legal issues regarding best practices for boards of directors with a fun Best-in-Show pet contest to help support a local nonprofit, Animal Samaritans.

AGING INFRASTRUCTURES. Adrian Adams serves on the board of directors of the national Foundation for Community Association Research. A project he helped launch, Aging Infrastructures, has been completed. The Foundation published a report, Breaking Point, that will be invaluable for boards of directors across the nation as they reserve for infrastructure repairs and replacements. The Foundation also produced a promotional video about the project.

5-15-20. Attorney Alex Sohol and Partner Nathan McGuire participated in CAI BayCen Chapter's virtual program entitled Everyone's Favorite — Free Legal Advice! They addressed a variety of topics, and answered questions from managers.

The program included Aaron Zimmerman and Andrea O'Toole with Berding|Weil, Melissa Ward and Hanh Pham with Hughes Gill Cochrane Tinetti, Jordan O'Brien and Zer Iyer with Angius & Terry,  and Stephen Brindle, with SwedelsonGottlieb.

5-12-20. Adrian Adams joined reserve fund expert Robert Nordlund (Association Reserves) to address how boards can use their reserves to preserve cash.

The webinar discussion, which drew 600 attendees, included deferral of maintenance, reallocation of  contributions, and borrowing  funds in the midst of a pandemic.

4-30-20. Partner Nathan McGuire participated in a "Chapter Chat" for CAI California North. He was joined by Jasmine Hale, Esq. as they spoke on Contracts & Assessments in a Pandemic.

4-22-20. Adrian Adams, joined by Gary Porter, CPA, Regina Korossy, MBA, and Steve Tinnelly, Esq., spoke on the topic The Global Financial Crisis: How It Impacts Your Community.

The panel discussed the current financial crisis, collections and foreclosures, potential relief for associations from the SBA, and options Boards have at their disposal. The one-hour webinar, which offered CE credit to attendees, ran from 11:00am to 12:00noon.

4-6-20. Laurie S. Poole, CCAL, spoke at CACM’s first live, online 2-hour educational webinar, New Case Law Online.

Laurie covered new case law and how it impacts both the jobs of community association managers and the operation of associations throughout California. 

Topics included maintenance, repair and replacement issues, elections, enforcement, fair housing and more.

3-24-20 Laurie S. Poole, CCAL, spoke on Coronavirus and Community Associations in a webinar presented by CAI and the College of Community Association Lawyers.

Laurie covered issues including meetings, common areas/facilities, assessments, construction/repairs and quarantines.  To see the seminar, go to YouTube.

 

3-15-20. Tonya Todd joined our team of attorneys.

Former JAG Officer. As a Captain in the Army and a JAG officer, Tonya led the prosecution of felony crimes including sexual assaults, larceny, aggravated assaults, child abuse, fraud, conspiracy, and homicides.

Magistrate Judge. Tonya also served as a Magistrate Judge and presided over pretrial confinements, reviewed evidence, made findings, issued warrants and ruled on law enforcement applications for search and seizure authorizations. In addition, Tonya authored over 150 legal opinions on matters such as sexual harassment, discrimination, ethics, and environmental law.

Education. Tonya received her Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from Sacramento State University in Sacramento, California. She then went on to earn a Juris Doctorate from the Hastings College of Law in San Francisco, California.

3-6-20. Adrian Adams joined a panel of attorneys at the Management Trust's Annual Directors Symposium. The program, 20/20, A Vision for the Future, was held at the Agua Caliente Resort Casino & Spa in Rancho Mirage.

The panel, which also included Sue McClintic, Christina Dejardin, Dennis Burke and Stephen Kirkland, discussed the challenges boards face with the new laws imposed by the legislature and courts.

2-27-20. Adrian Adams participated in Desert Resort Management's annual HOA Community Leadership Educational Symposium.

He spoke on the changes in election procedures imposed by SB 323. The event was held at the Agua Caliente Resort Casino & Spa in Rancho Mirage.

2-6-20. Adrian Adams was joined in a panel discussion by attorney Jeff Beaumont of Beaumont Tashjian and FirstService Residential manager Dawn Suskin at the 2020 CACM Law Seminar and Expo in Santa Clara, California. The topic Barefoot in the Clubhouse covered alcohol-related issues, vaping & marijuana, and potential problems with political rallies in the common areas.

2-5-20. Adrian Adams spoke to the Wilshire Corridor Board President's Council in Los Angeles, an organization of highrise Presidents and onsite General Managers. 

His topic dealt with the various laws and challenges faced by boards and managers in addressing the harassment of employees, board members and employees from other employees and non-employees.  Adrian addressed the actions boards can and should take to address such issues.

1-21-20. Partner Nathan McGuire and Deon Stein of The Law Offices of Deon R. Stein presented the Annual Legal Update for the CAI, covering the new laws and cases impacting associations.

The program, held at the Stockton Golf and Country Club, drew 102 enthusiastic members.

 

1-17-20. Laurie S. Poole spoke to more than 500 attorneys at the College of Community Association Lawyers (CCAL) Annual Law Seminar. Community association attorneys from around the country attended Laurie's case law update. Laurie was joined by current CCAL President Ed Allcock of Marcus, Errico, Emmer & Brooks, highlighting 2019 Appellate Court and Supreme Court cases throughout the country.
