12-20-18. Partner Jasmine Hale conducted a training session at FirstService Residential’s new Los Angeles Office. The presentation was Adams|Stirling’s CE Credit Course, “Avoiding Litgation.”

Jasmine covered a breadth of issues such as deferred maintenance, insurance requirements and vendor contracts. Lastly, Jasmine covered best practices managers can take to ensure their Associations stay free and clear of litigation.

12-12-18. Adrian Adams hosted the 25th anniversary of Adams|Stirling's annual high-rise managers' luncheon.

This an annual event is exclusive to onsite high-rise managers, where they discuss changes in the law and their impact on their associations. The program also covers issues relevant to high-rises.

12-12-18. Avalon Management hosted a Holiday Client Appreciation Celebration for their favorite HOAs in San Diego at The Crossings Resort. Adams|Stirling Partner Laurie Poole, attorney Carrie Heieck, and Client Relations Director, San Diego Candace Schwartz were honored to represent Adams Stirling. The celebration included dining, singing and general merriment. A wonderfully festive time was had by all!

12-8-16. Adrian Adams spoke to 150 board members at an event in Los Angeles hosted by HOA Organizers, Inc. He spoke on (i) new laws affecting boards of directors, (ii) how to deal with rogue directors, and (iii) important disclosures related to litigation, escrows and other matters.

12-2-18. Stefan Herpel joined our firm's litigation team. Stefan  previously worked as a litigation partner in a large law firm where he represented corporations such as Marriott International, Ritz-Carlton, Wyndham Worldwide, and American Airlines.

As a trial attorney, Stefan handled boundary disputes, eminent domain, easements, partition actions, defamation (for national media clients), products liability, and securities fraud (class action defense).

In addition to trial court experience, Stefan argued in the U.S. Courts of Appeals for the Third and Sixth Circuits, the Michigan appellate courts, and the U.S. Supreme Court (where he briefed and argued Bennis v. Michigan).

11-28-18. ADAMS|STIRLING Client Relations Director/Administrator, Northern California, Melina Treantos (now Melina Drazich) married longtime beau Cavan Drazich in beautiful Lake Tahoe. We offer the happy couple heartiest congratulations and wish them a wonderful life together!

 

 

11-25-18. Troy Kennedy joined our Los Angeles office.

Prior to joining ADAMS|STIRLING, Troy gained valuable experience handling complex civil litigation involving breach of contract, fraud, trademark infringement, real estate disputes, intellectual property, and probate law.

11-20-18. Partners Jasmine Hale and Laurie Poole launched a "Women’s Attorney Initiative" for the firm. The Initiative was created to support the professional development of women attorneys in the firm, identify the unique challenges they face in their legal careers, promote work/life balance, and provide a network for advancing leadership opportunities in the firm as well as the legal community as a whole.

11-18-18. Alison Greiner joined our firm's Temecula Office and will work with our clients in San Diego and Inland Empire.

Alison is a 15-year attorney who brings valuable experience representing clients in corporate formation and transactions, premises liability, contracts, real estate transactions, human resource issues, workers' compensation, personal injury, litigation and dispute resolution.

11-18-18. Kathy Mills joined our firm's San Diego office.

Kathy brings extensive experience representing community associations as well as developers of condomium, single-family, highrise, mixed-use, master planned ccommunities, and condo conversions.

Much of her career has been spent advising boards of directors, amending and restating governing documents, reviewing and negotiating contracts, providing legal opinions, and litigating matters on behalf of associations.

11-11-18. ADAMS|STIRLING opened its twelfth office in historic Old Town Temecula. The office will be managed by senior attorney Nancy Sidoruk. Adams Stirling Partner Jasmine Hale gives fascinating presentation on new issues facing HOA boards11-08-18. Partner Jasmine Hale, accompanied by Sean D. Allen, a partner at Roseman Law APC, did a presentation at the CAI Channel Island Central Coast Dinner Program on the new challenges HOAs are facing. From hoarding to marijuana growing and smoking, Jasmine focused on solutions for Managers and Board Members facing these issues, and the 85 attendees are now much better-equipped to deal with them!

10-19-18. Laurie S. Poole, Esq., Managing Partner in Carlsbad/San Diego offices, will participate in mock mediation at CAI’s Legal Forum at Pechanga Resort in TemeculaLaurie S. Poole, Esq., Managing Partner in the Carlsbad/San Diego region offices,  participated in a live mock mediation session at CAI’s Legal Forum at Pechanga Resort in Temecula. The mediation involved a fictitious Community Association v. Homeowner Dispute about an architectural review committee (ARC) submission gone bad, and identified common pitfalls that plague community associations’ ARC enforcements, demonstrated typical homeowner claims and defenses, and walked through the procedural aspects of an alternative dispute resolution mediation held under the Davis-Stirling Act.

10-14-18. Attorney Dana Rosenberg joined ADAMS|STIRLING and will head the firm's Santa Barbara office.

Dana's litigation experience includes both state and federal courts involving real property disputes, fraudulent transfers, easements, use permits, environmental issues, business and contract disputes, and homeowner association disputes.

Her transactional work includes commercial and residential sales and leasing, business purchase and sales, loans and loan sales, and community association documents. Dana also has an interesting niche in equine sales and leasing, specializing in Arabian horses.

The well-attended event was held at the CAI Bay Area and Central California Chapter's Silicon Coast Education Day & Mini-Expo at The Hotel Paradox in gorgeous Santa Cruz, and garnered rave reviews as "a terrific and engaging presentation."

10-4-18. Adrian Adams and Senior Partner Hon. Lawrence Stirling packed a lot of sightseeing into their recent trip to Manhattan. 

In addition to attending private briefings on economics and finance, they managed to take in some plays and enjoy meals at Sardi’s and Tavern on the Green.

10-4-18. Cang Le, Partner and Head of Litigation, together with  Senior Attorney Nancy I. Sidoruk, provided an educational seminar to a management company in Upland. The topic was Avoiding Litigation, in which managers learned how to prevent litigation in their associations through personal injury prevention, management of maintenance issues and general tips on preventing litigation.

9-26-18.Adams Stirling Associate Tara Hicks meets with Congress in support of CHANGE act Attorney Tara Hicks met with members of Congress on Capitol Hill as an advocate for the Alzheimer’s Los Angeles, in support of the CHANGE Act (H.R. 4957/S. 2387). 

The CHANGE Act seeks to increase participation in Alzheimer’s research and provide additional programs and support for those living with Alzheimer’s disease and their caregivers. Please join her efforts in supporting this legislation, and Send a message to your Representative.

 

9-23-18. Adams Stirling Turns out in Force to Support 2018 CASA Justice JogStaff and attorneys from ADAMS | STIRLING participated in the Justice Jog, a 5K/10K Run that takes place in Century City to support CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates). CASA recruits, trains and supports court-appointed volunteers to advocate on behalf of children.

Two CAI Chapters, Bay Area & Central CA and Northern CA, hosted their First Annual CAI Legal Forum: NorCAL. The Forum was held at the Oakland Marriott City Center, with the theme "Harvesting Bountiful Communities." 

Adrian Adams was joined by Sandra Long, CCAM, PCAM to present Hot Litigation Topics: Litigation Trends and Steps to Reduce Risk. Managers earned up to 7 hours’ continuing education credit towards re-certification of CAI Professional Credentials (including PCAM).

9-14-18. Adams Stirling Partner Laurie S. Poole manages the San Diego area offices and is a fellow of CAI’s College of Community Association Lawyers (CCAL)Laurie S. Poole, Esq., a Fellow of CAI’s College of Community Association Lawyers (CCAL), was joined by Rachael Robenolt, owner of 360 Community Management, at CAI-San Diego's San Diego Trade Show & Educational Program, in a discussion of an association's journey through a discrimination claim brought by the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing. In addition, they provided education on preparing for and participating in the mediation process, as well as establishing protocols and procedures to responding to requests for reasonable accommodations/modifications. Laurie is a Partner with ADAMS | STIRLING and is the Managing Partner overseeing the San Diego/Carlsbad region. The event was held at the newly renovated DoubleTree by Hilton in Mission Valley.
 

 Adams Stirling Partner Nathan McGuire to present Marijuana in CIDs at 32nd annual conference9-7-18. Partner Nathan McGuire presented Marijuana in CIDs at Levy, Erlanger & Company's 32nd Annual Community Association Managers & Board Members Conference & Tradeshow, at the Hilton Garden Inn in Emeryville. In addition to helping attendees understand Federal and California law regarding smoking and marijuana issues in CIDs, highlights of Nathan's presentation included adopting and enforcing restrictions regarding growing, smoking, and production of marijuana and marijuana products; adopting and enforcing restrictions regarding cigarette smoke; and dealing with owner expectations, complaints, and claims.

9-6-18. Adams Stirling Founder and Managing Partner Adrian Adams to present short-term rentals at 6th annual conferenceAdrian Adams spoke at the 6th Annual Community Association Management Company Owners Conference put on by Levy, Erlanger & Company. The conference theme was "Increasing the bottom line and reducing risk."

In Airbnb and Rental Issues, Adrian covered recent developments affecting short-term rentals and the impact on associations. The event was held at the Hilton Garden Inn, 1800 Powell Street, Emeryville, CA 94608.

8-17-18.  Adrian Adams, a board member for the Los Angeles chapter of the Community Associations Institute, participated in an all-day strategic planning session for the chapter. Directors set goals for the growth of the chapter.

8-1-18. ADAMS|STIRLING was named a 2018 “Best Places to Work” by the Los Angeles Business Journal. Best Places to Work is a survey managed by Best Companies Group to determine the best employers in the Los Angeles area.

This distinction is awarded to companies whose employees, having been extensively surveyed, have deemed their employers to meet certain benchmarks in terms of benefits, diversity, satisfaction with management, their workplace, and supervision.

7-20-18. Dynamic Adams Stirling Partner Cang Le to teach CID law courseCang Le, together with Dea Franck, of Epsten Grinnell & Howell, APC, taught CAI’s California Common Interest Development (CID) Law Course at CAI-CV's Classroom in Palm Desert, approved by the California Department of Real Estate to satisfy the law course requirement for California manager certification. This is the most comprehensive legal course available for professionals managing community associations, including managers, board members and professionals who provide services to associations. Participants were provided with a broad review of California and Federal laws affecting community associations, including the Business and Professions Code, Uniform Common Interest Ownership Act, Davis-Stirling Act, and the California Corporations Code.

7-12-18. Jasmine Hale and Sean Kargari, RS, Senior Project Manager, Association Reserves, presented Tight Budgets, Tough Choices at The Management Emporium, Inc.'s invitation-only lunch and learn in Glendale.

6-28-18. Partner Laurie S. Poole spoke at the North County Bar Association, Real Estate Section, MCLE Lunch Session. Her program title was Common Interest Developments – Dispute Resolution. Laurie discussed the high cost of unresolved conflicts in homeowners associations, and the role Internal Dispute Resolution and Alternative Dispute Resolution play in resolving conflict.

6-19-18. CAI-CLAC scored a major victory on SB 721. Senator Hill agreed to amend his bill in the Assembly Business and Professions Committee to delete Section 2 of the bill, which pertains to Common Interest Developments. With that amendment, the amended bill passed on a unanimous vote to apply to  apartment complexes only, thanks to the efforts of CAI-CLAC members throughout California, including ADAMS | STIRLING's own Nathan McGuire, Esq., CLAC Vice Chair and upcoming Chair, Executive Committee; Jasmine Hale, Esq., CLAC Channel Islands Committee Liaison; and Legislative Support Committee members Sue Anderson and Melina Treantos.

6-7-18.Dynamic Adams Stirling Partner Cang Le holds an SRO crowd at rapt attention Cang Le, partner and head of litigation at Adams Stirling PLC, spoke at the CAI-GRIE Educational Expo on June 7 at Pechanga Resort & Spa in Temecula.  

The standing room-only class featured the topic Dealing with Conflict at Your Association: IDR/ADR and had about 70 attendees.

Nancy will work with partners Cang Le and Laurie Poole representing community associations throughout the Inland Empire.

Jamie has practiced for 17 years, with the past 12 years specializing in HOA law, representing community associations throughout San Diego County. She has extensive experience in construction litigation, enforcement of governing documents, civil litigation, collections, and fair housing compliance. They presented Marijuana in Common Interest Developments to a crowd of 30 managers. The program was well received by the attendees.

4-19-18.Managing Partner and Firm Founder Adrian Adams Adrian Adams was selected to serve on the national Foundation for Community Association Research (FCAR) Board of Directors. In addition to conducting research projects, the Foundation publishes Best Practices Reports for community associations, salary surveys with up-to-date compensation data on the community association industry, Fact Books about the industry in all 50 states, and homeowner satisfaction surveys.
 

4-19-18.Managing Partner and Firm Founder Adrian Adams Adrian Adams joined Nancy Scull (Sheppard Mullin), Michael Klein (Klein & Weisz) and Garrett Newland (Macerich Co.) on a panel at the Real Property Law Retreat put on by the State Bar (now the California Lawyers Association). The panel discussed the shifting needs of residential common interest developments, mixed-use developments, shopping complexes and commercial condominiums, and their impact on CC&Rs.

ADAMS | STIRLING Attorney Alex Sohal joined Tracy Dale, CMCA, AMS to present How to Best Utilize Your Manager and Attorney - They Are not the Same! at CAI BayCen Chapter's Stockton Education Luncheon to a packed house at the beautiful Stockton Golf and Country Club. Topics included What HOA Managers can and cannot do (or say); When to call in the big guns, or better yet, your HOA Attorney; and While it may seem like a good idea and no doubt less expensive, your manager is not your attorney. Alex's presentation was so successful, the Education Committee asked him to join the Committee!

ADAMS | STIRLING Partner Laurie S. Poole, CCAL and Deon R. Stein, Esq., of The Law Offices of Deon R. Stein delivered an informative presentation at the education session of the California Legislative Action Committee Legislative Day at the Capitol in Sacramento. Their presentation provided a breakdown of the scheduled events and various steps a bill goes through before it becomes a law, a favorite topic for both new and returning attendees at this annual conference.

Stein, Esq., of The Law Offices of Deon R. Stein presented Case Law Update 2018 to Omni Community Management's Annual Board Member Summit.

More than 100 Board members were registered, with 40 business partners exhibiting.

Client Relations Director Melina Treantos Wins Scholarship3-22-18. ADAMS | STIRLING's Client Relations Director/Administrator for Northern California, Melina Treantos, received a $2000 scholarship from the Golden Gate Chapter of the Association of Legal Administrators for the 2018 Region West ALA Conference October 18-20th in Austin, TX.

Adams Stirling Partner Laurie Poole and Rochelle Ceballos, CCAM have some fun with a serious topic at CACM Expo 20183-15-18. ADAMS | STIRLING Partner Laurie Poole and Rochelle Ceballos, CCAM with Action Property Management, Inc. presented the topic Navigating the New California Marijuana Law and other Smoking Issues Affecting Your Communities at CACM's Legal Expo in Anaheim. The session addressed how community associations could draft and enforce rules and regulations concerning smoking, as well as how legalization of marijuana impacts associations' need to accommodate homeowners with disabilities.

 3-4-18. New Adams Stirling Partner Laurie Poole is a member of the CCAL Board of GovernorsLaurie S. Poole, CCAL joined ADAMS|STIRLING as our newest Partner. Ms. Poole brings 25 years of experience as an attorney in the HOA industry.

CCAL Fellow. Laurie is a fellow of the Community Association Institute’s prestigious College of Community Association Lawyers (CCAL) and was recently elected to its Board of Governors.

Case Law. Laurie is also a member of CCAL’s Amicus Review Committee and devotes time to shaping the laws governing California’s community associations. Laurie has already had a significant impact in our courts of appeal. Ms. Poole was appellate counsel in Quail Lakes v. Kozina (2012), trial and appellate counsel in Mission Shores v. Phiel (2008), and trial counsel in Fourth La Costa v. Seith (2008). Through her efforts, nine appellate decisions have become published case law in California.

Legal Practice. Laurie has extensive experience representing common interest developments, including master planned communities, large condominium projects, mixed-use, and high-rise developments. The majority of her practice involves interpreting and amending governing documents, advising boards on compliance matters, addressing governance and insurance issues, and enforcement of governing documents.

Education. Laurie graduated from the University of California, Santa Barbara with a double major in English and Sociology. She earned her Juris Doctor from the University of San Diego School of Law, where she was a member of the Law Review.

3-3-18.Senior Attorney Wayne Louvier helps CAI give back in Orange County Wayne Louvier joined dozens of CAI volunteers at the Orange County Food Bank in Garden Grove to box over 2000 food packages for delivery to seniors in surrounding communities.

Wayne noted, “It was a great opportunity to give back to the communities where we work and live and help seniors in a meaningful way. I met some old acquaintances and made some new ones. The commitment of the CAI volunteers was fantastic. Working with everyone on the packaging lines was great fun.”

2-21-18. Adams Stirling Associate Aaron Schwarzkopf has article published in CAI-LA's Focus MagazineAaron Schwarzkopf's article on "Recordkeeping: Are You Meeting Retention Requirements?" was printed in Focus Magazine.

Focus is published by the Los Angeles chapter of the Community Associations Institute.

The honor is reserved for those lawyers who exhibit excellence in the practice of law.

Topics also included: what is an association's role when it comes to process serves and restraining orders, and how can associations protect themselves against potential liability?

2-1-18. Leading HOA Attorney and Adams Stirling Partner Jasmine Hale ADAMS | STIRLING Partner Jasmine Hale was joined by Roseman & Associates' Sean Allen to present the program, Dealing with Difficult People: Strategies for Responding to Hoarding Disorders and Hostile Environments, at the 39th Annual Community Association Law Seminar in La Quinta, California. Five percent of the population suffers from hoarding disorder, and Community Associations will face greater numbers of these cases as the American population ages. The 2016 changes to the Fair Housing Act have added complexities to dealing with these issues. In this 5-star rated session, attendees learned about the laws related to both topics, explored the psychological elements associated with these issues, and gained strategies and recommendations on how best to respond to these problems.

And as if her reputation weren't stellar enough already, Jasmine was named CAI Channel Islands Chapter's Volunteer of the Year at its January 12th red-carpet gala, held at the Hyatt Westlake Plaza. Jasmine serves as the liaison between the Channel Islands chapter and California Legislative Action Committee (CLAC). CLAC is the largest advocacy organization in America dedicated to monitoring legislation, educating elected state lawmakers, and protecting the interests of those living in homeowners associations in California.
