QUESTION: What can we do about children who engage in vandalism?
ANSWER: Hold a noticed
hearing and, provided you have sufficient evidence that their children are the culprits,
fine the parents and
special assess them for the cost of the repairs. If you don't have a rule related to vandalism, your board should adopt one (following
proper notice). The rule should apply to anyone regardless of age who vandalizes property in the development. Make it clear that vandalism has no age discrimination, "children" who engage in vandalism could be viewed as
discriminatory against families.
