abreviations and Acronyms
Following is a list of abbreviations and acronyms used in the community association industry. If there are abbreviations, definitions and links you think should be added to the list, please email them to info@davis-stirling.com.


AAMC
Accredited Association Management Company. A manager certification issued by the Community Associations Institute.

ADA Americans with Disabilities Act

ADR Alternative Dispute Resolution

AG Attorney General

AICPA
American Institute of Certified Public Accountants

AMS
Association Management Specialist. A manager certification issued by the California Association of Community Managers.

ARC
Architectural Review Committee. Also referred to as "Architectural Committee" "Design Review Committee" or "Environmental Control Committee." Older documents sometimes refer to it as the "Art Jury."

BJR
Business Judgment Rule

BOMA Building Owners and Managers Association. An organization dedicated primarily to the owners of apartment and commercial buildings.

CACM
California Association of Community Managers.

CAI
Community Associations Institute

CCAM
Certified Community Association Manager. A manager certification issued by the Community Associations Institute.

CC&Rs Declaration of Covenants, Conditions & Restrictions

CD
Certificate of Deposit. An interest-bearing, FDIC insured investments offered by banks and savings & loans.

CDARS
Certificate of Deposit Account Registry Service. A program offered by some banks where an association's monies can be dispersed into individual CDs up to FDIC limits in member banks across the country. 

CID
Common Interest Development
CIRA
Common Interest Realty Association

CLAC California Legislative Action Committee. A CAI committee that tracks and lobbies the Legislature on bills affecting common interest developments.

CMCA
Certified Manager of Community Associations. A manager certification issued by the National Board of Certification of Community Association Managers.

CO-OP
Refers to a "Stock Cooperative," a form of common interest developments.

CPA Certified Public Accountant

CPI
Consumer Price Index. Used by many associations during the budgeting process.

CPM
Certified Property Manager. A manager certification issued by the Institute of Real Estate Management.

dB Decibel. A unit of measurement for sound intensity.
DRE
Department of Real Estate

ECC
Environmental Control Committee. A term used by some associations for the Architectural Committee.

ECHO
Executive Council of Homeowners. An industry organization headquartered in San Jose, California that publishes articles by industry experts, hosts educational seminars and lobbies to improve the laws that govern HOAs.
   EV Electric Vehicle

EVC Electric Vehicle Charger

FASB Financial Accounting Standards Board. An organization that develops concepts and standards for financial accounting and reporting for organizations and businesses.

FCC Federal Communications Commission

FDIC
Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation

FHA Federal Housing Administration

FIIC Field Impact Insulation Class
  FTB
Franchise Tax Board. California agency that collects income taxes from California residents.

GAAP Generally Accepted Accounting Principles. A set of rules, conventions, standards, and procedures for reporting financial information.

HELOC Home Equity Line of Credit

Homeowners Association

HUD Housing and Urban Development

Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning

IDR Internal Dispute Resolution

IIC Impact Insulation Class. A laboratory measurement of the ability of proposed materials to mitigate against impact sounds such as footfalls.

LSM
Large-Scale Manager. A manager certification issued by the Community Associations Institute.

MUD Mixed Use Development

NBC-CAM
National Board of Certification of Community Association Managers.

NIC Noise Isolation Class. An over-all measurement of the sound isolation between units in a multi-family dwelling.

NOD Notice of Default. Initiates the foreclosure process against a delinquent owner.

PCAM
Professional Community Association Manager. A manager certification issued by the Community Associations Institute.

PD Planned Development

POA Property Owners Association

PUD Planned Unit Development. Used interchangeably with PD.

  RFB Request for Bid

RFP
Request for Proposal

STC Sound Transmission Class

TIC
Tenants in Common. Denotes a form of common interest development where ownership is held as tenants in common with an exclusive right to occupy a particular unit. The most common TICs are community apartment projects.

TRO
Temporary Restraining Order. An emergency remedy of brief duration which prevent a party from taking a particular action until the court has had an opportunity to hear arguments or evidence on an issue.
